Nigella Sativa also known as Black Seed
Last summer, we planted a handful of little Nigella sativa seeds into the soil for the first time. Black seed as it's commonly known is commonly used in the Middle East, for culinary, medicine as well as beauty care. Archaeologists even found black seed oil in the tomb of Tutankhamun. Some scholars believe that Nigella was referenced in Isaiah 28:25-27. Whether or not the identification is exact, it is beautiful to consider that this humble little seed may have been known and tended in ancient Biblical lands.
It was truly exciting to get to know and learn from this plant. Watching it sprout, stretch, bloom and finally offer its seeds is a form of learning that books alone cannot give. Nigella is a graceful plant. Its feathery, fern-like leaves soften the garden beds, and then — almost like a surprise — come the flowers. Ours bloomed in soft shades of violet-blue with pale yellow centers, each one like a tiny star hovering above the greenery. They are both wild and refined, humble yet intricate. We made a stunning midsummer bouquet with a handful of cut Nigella flowers along with marigold, little chamomile buttons, immortelle and holy basil flowers.
As the season matures, the petals fall away and the flower transforms into a balloon-like pod. Inside, slowly and quietly, the seeds develop. When the pods dry and are ready for harvest, they rattle gently when shaken. Crack one open and you’ll find the small matte-black seeds within, aromatic and sharp, carrying a scent somewhere between oregano, onion, and warm spice. As an adventurous cook, I sprinkled our harvested black seeds on homemade pitas and also as a topping over curries and stir fries, similar to sesame seeds.
Skin & Wellness Benefits
Black seed oil is rich in compounds such as thymoquinone, essential fatty acids, and antioxidants. Traditionally, it has been used to:
- Support calm, balanced skin
- Help soothe dryness or irritation
- Nourish the skin barrier
- Provide antioxidant protection
- Support scalp and hair health
In wellness traditions, it has also been taken internally (when food-grade and properly prepared) to support digestion, immune function, and respiratory health. We always encourage thoughtful, informed use and consulting trusted health professionals for internal use.
From Garden to Bottle: Our Black Seed & Vanilla Luminous Facial Oil
Growing Nigella ourselves changed how we see this plant. Each pod harvested by hand, each seed gathered slowly — it gives a deeper respect for the oil pressed from them. Our Black Seed & Vanilla Luminous Facial Oil was born from that experience.
We paired nutrient-dense black seed oil with gentle, skin-loving botanicals and a whisper of natural vanilla for warmth and comfort. The result is a facial oil that feels both grounding and indulgent; earthy yet softly sweet.
It is formulated to:
- Support a radiant glow
- Help balance and nourish the skin
- Offer soothing botanical care
- Invite a simple ritual of self-care
A few drops pressed into the skin can become a quiet moment in the day, a reminder that beauty often begins with what is grown, tended, and prepared with intention. There is something sacred in the life cycle of a plant: seed to flower, flower to pod, pod to seed again. Black seed carries that story well, a reminder that small things, grown with care, can hold great richness.
From our fields to your home with care and gratitude for the plants that teach us. 🌿
